Lake Michigan turns every lakefront isochrone into a half-circle, and the lakeshore neighborhoods (Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, Edgewater) have inherently constrained trade areas that need to be benchmarked against other coastal markets rather than landlocked Midwest peers. The expressway system funnels suburban traffic through a few choke points — the Circle Interchange, the Hillside Strangler — that produce massive peak-hour drive-time degradation. The Metra commuter rail network also means transit-time reach into the Loop is meaningful from suburbs like Naperville, Schaumburg, and Evanston.
Franchise developers should treat Chicagoland as three distinct markets: the city core (high density, transit-driven), the inner-ring suburbs along the expressways (Oak Park, Evanston, Cicero), and the outer collar counties (DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane) where drive-time behaves like a typical Sun Belt metro. Trade-area thresholds that work in Naperville will badly misjudge the Loop, and vice versa. Brands sensitive to weather should also model winter-adjusted isochrones — Chicago's cold-season trip suppression is among the steepest in the country.
