Understanding Louisville's geography
Why Louisville's drive times defy radius math.
The Ohio River eliminates northward market reach for Louisville sites — crossing into Indiana via I-65's Sherman Minton Bridge or I-71's Kennedy Bridge adds 6-8 minutes at peak, making Jeffersonville and Clarksville, IN outside effective 15-minute isochrones for most Kentuckiana locations. The Watterson Expressway (I-264) ring functions as a catchment boundary, and sites outside it pull from lower-density residential areas.
The Shelbyville Road (US-60) corridor through St. Matthews and Middletown carries the metro's highest retail sales per square mile east of downtown, making it the priority zone for franchise site selection. The Outer Loop (KY-1819) through Valley Station and Fairdale in south Jefferson County is an emerging corridor where demographics are strengthening and franchise supply is thin.
